PIZZA MAGHERITA was Named for HER
Raffaelle Esposito is believed to be the Pizzaiolo who created the FIRST PIZZA MARGHERITA and name it for Queen Margherita in 1889 …
It is said that Esposito baked three different kinds of Pizza for the Queen and King Umberto I of Savoy. The Queen liked the Pizza topped with Tomato, Fresh Basil, and fresh Mozzarella Cheese and Raffaelle Esposito named it Pizza Margherita in the Queens honor. The rest is history.

NAPOLI’S Most Classic Pizza
The OLDEST PIZZERIA in NAPOLI
Opened in 1830
First established as a stand for street peddlers in 1738, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba opened in 1830 at Via Port’Alba 18. The restaurant (Pizzeria) replaced street vendors who made Pizza in wood-fired ovens and brought the Pizza out into the streets. The street vendors kept the Pizza warm in small tin stoves and sold it to people on the street. Port’Alba became a popular meeting place for men. Most patrons were artists and students who had very little money, so the toppings were kept simple with Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper, and Garlic.
Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba is still open today, and is believed to be the World’s First Pizzeria.
